Following a video that went viral and was circulated on social networks by an individual claiming to be the president of the Taxpayers’ Rights Association, it is imperative to provide some clarification. The video states that “the parking tax no longer exists in Cameroon (…) as do many other taxes”, and cites law no. 2024/020 of December 23, 2024 as the legal argument.
CLARIFICATION ON LAW N°2024/020
It is important to point out that although law n° 2024/020 on local taxation has been passed by parliament and promulgated by the Head of State, it is still awaiting an implementing decree and a joint circular from the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Decentralization and Local Development. These documents are essential to enable decentralized local authorities to take the necessary decisions to facilitate the collection of the taxes concerned.
SYNTHETIC GENERAL TAX (SGT)
It is also true that the Synthetic General Tax (SGT) incorporates several taxes, notably: the final tax, the OTVP, the hygiene tax, the market duty and the livestock tax. However, pending publication of the aforementioned implementing decree and joint circular, the Councils, including Dschang, remain within their rights and roles with regard to the collection of these various taxes.
We therefore appeal for a sense of responsibility and restraint in the dissemination of unverified information that could mislead the public and users of communal services. The Dschang Council is always ready to listen to its constituents and undertakes to communicate all developments relating to this law as soon as they become official.
